You don’t have to be a sports fan or a baseball fan to appreciate someone who’s made a comeback. It’s the story of David and Goliath, the underdog, the one who was counted out but came back for a win that we all relate to. I think it’s because we all can empathize with being left for dead, marginalized, dismissed, and assumed no longer relevant to so many of these stories that endear us to the characters portrayed.
This years World Series between the Houston Astros and the Los Angles Dodgers was an exciting series that had everything a sports fan would want. Competition at the highest level was on display. One team representing the highest payroll in baseball and another representing a young team making a move for their first World Series win ever. While the Astros was a great team they were considered by many the underdog to the deep pockets of talent and resource, L.A. Dodgers.
The more interesting story to me and one I was familiar with because of his short stint with the Braves was of Evan Gattis (Oso Blanco). Just a few years prior to getting back into baseball, and game he had pretty much given up on, Evan was sweeping floors as a janitor. Like most kids he grew up with a dream. And like most people that dream was challenged and put into, “the press.” However unlike many he dared to try again, reach again, and go for it. I’m sure if you asked Evan last night if he’s glad he got back up, he would tell you absolutely.
I’ve always found that sports and being an entrepreneur have so much in common. The idea of fighting for what you want, training for what you desire, and daring to reach past your fears are principles required whether on the ball field or in the boardroom.
